EARTH DAY - ART PROJECT

ANIMATED TREES—Due Date Tuesday, April 28th

The student will learn to successfully draw a “V” and “Y” tree, and technically color and animate their tree.

Ask yourself these questions while working on your tree:
Does it have a likeness to a tree and face?
• Are the branches tapered at the
ends and do they overlap?
• Have you colored the tree and face
in solid, with appropriate colors?
• Did you use at least two colors for
the sky?
• Is the grass correctly placed in the
picture?

Practice drawing your “V” and “Y” trees. Once you are satisfied with your tree shape. Then begin drawing the final product. Think about trees and The Wizard of Oz trees that come to life and are animated. They have faces and character. Think about cartoons and cartooning. Practice drawing a face on your paper for practice until you achieve the feeling you want for your own character. Research cartoon faces online. Make a face and Think about the emotion you are trying to represent. How are trees like people? How can you show different emotions through a look on your face?

     Instructions

1. Draw a “V” and “Y” tree leaving about two to three inches empty on the trunk for your face.

2. Color your tree in the direction it grows. There should be no white showing on your tree. So color it solid and leave two to three inches space on the main trunk for your face.

3.  Then draw your face and color your face, ears, and lips with skin tone colored pencils. You can also go over the eyes and lips with other colors. You should make sure you do not color the whites of the eyes (this is the ONLY white that should be on your paper.)

4. Next focus on drawing the sky. The sky does not have to be just blue, try to incorporate two colors into the sky. It should also express the same type of emotion you are including in your face. So your sky should match the mood and emotion of your face.

5. Lastly include grass in your picture, but make sure the grass does not go into the face of your tree.

Examples (Please do not copy, be creative and original):

Once you are finished please write a short story about your tree explaining your trees emotions and mood. (Must have 5-7 sentences.)

The Spoken Word. Ancient Hebrew society had little or no paper. So the spoken word (or Oral Tradition as it is sometimes called) was at first, the source of the knowledge of God’s work among his people. In other words people only heard about God when people spoke to each other about God. The Covenant bound the Israelites together as the People of God.

Abraham’s Story is in the book of Genesis (11:26-25:10). He was very loyal to God, he believed and trusted in God enough to leave his father and journey to an unknown country. He was also so obedient to God he was willing to sacrifice his son, Isaac. God will always guide us. Important to remember to trust in God in these difficult times.

Math Challenge!

Giant Jelly Beans
“Aunty, come look what we got you from Texas!” called Danny as he came through the kitchen door, wearing the biggest cowboy hat I ever saw.
I quickly took off my apron, and ran to greet the boys.  They had been on a short vacation trip with their parents to San Antonio, Texas, and I was eager to hear all about it.
“What is San Antonio like?” I asked.
“Oh, its really neat. There is a river that runs through the city. There were boats to ride up and down the river, and people were playing Mexican music all the time!” said Barney, sitting down at the table.  “We got these giant Texas cowboy hats because everything in Texas is supposed to be big.”
“And don’t forget the Tex-Mex food!” said Danny.  “ Enchiladas, tacos, barbeque. Giant plates just full of food!”
“I should know you’d like the food best!” I said, laughing. (Danny is a genuine food lover!)
“Speaking of food,” said Danny, holding up a sack , “We brought you some Giant Texas Jelly Beans! In Texas even the jelly beans are huge.  Look at this!”
Danny held up a red jelly bean that was the size of my thumb.

“Well, I have to admit,” I said “That’s the biggest jelly bean I ever saw!”
“We bought some for you, aunty” said Barney, “but on the plane ride home, we thought of a math challenge using these beans.  Do you want to hear it?”
“I reckon I do, pardner! ” I said, trying to make my voice sound like a Texas cowboy.
“OK” said Danny. “You have to figure out how many giant jelly beans we brought you.  Here are the clues:
  • The number of red jelly beans is double the number of black jelly beans.
  • There are an equal number of black and green jelly beans.
  • There are 2 fewer red jelly beans than yellow  jelly beans.
  • There are half as many pink jelly beans as yellow jelly beans.
  • I counted 4 black jelly beans in the bag.”
“Hmm…that’s a Texas sized problem if I ever heard one,”  I said, shaking my head.
Can you help me figure out how many giant jelly beans the boys brought me? You may have to wear a Texas sized “thinking cap” to figure out this one!

Love,
Aunty Math

Math—Adding Fractions With Unlike Denominators

Notes in your journal:

Adding Fractions with Unlike denominators

Questions to ask when answering a problem

1) Are the denominators the same? If not find the lowest common denominator and convert the two fractions into equivalent fractions with the same denominator.
Example: 3/4 + 3/8  find the LCM which is 8. 3x2=6
                                                                          4x2=8
3/4 is equivalent to 6/8. Therefore 3/4 becomes 6/8 and 3/8 stays the same.

2) Add the two fractions, then ask is the answer a improper fractions, if it is change the fraction to a mixed number or whole number.
Example: 6/8 + 3/8 = 9/8.   9/8 becomes 1 1/8.

3) Ask yourself is your answer in simplest form, always put your answer into simplest form.
Example 1 1/8 is in simplest form.

Notes in Grammar journal

Hyperbole-a figure of speech that involves an exaggeration of ideas for the sake of emphasis.

Common Examples of Hyperbole

  • My grandmother is as old as the hills.
  • Your suitcase weighs a ton!
  • She is as heavy as an elephant!
  • I am dying of shame.
  • I am trying to solve a million issues these days.

It is important not to confuse hyperbole with simile and metaphor. It does make a comparison, like simile and metaphor. Rather, hyperbole has a humorous effect created by an overstatement

By using hyperbole, a writer or a poet makes common human feelings remarkable and intense to such an extent that they do not remain ordinary. In literature, usage of hyperbole develops contrasts. When one thing is described with an over-statement, and the other thing is presented normally, a striking contrast is developed. This technique is employed to catch the reader’s attention.

Personification

Personification gives human traits and qualities, such as emotions, desires, sensations, gestures and speech, often by way of a metaphor. Personification is much used in visual arts. Examples in writing are "the leaves waved in the wind", "the ocean heaved a sigh" or "the Sun smiled at us".

You can identify personification by noticing any moments where the author describes something non-human with human characteristics. Personification examples could include a writer comparing the sun's warmth to the arms of a loving mother.

Give three examples of Personification.
