Today is the Feast of the Annunciation! Mary said yes to being the Mother of Jesus! Watch this clip from the movie “The Nativity”

Some activities that are optional. At least read all the way to the end for an explanation of trust and obedience shown by Mary!

A Science experiment to illustrate “trust”:
Equipment needed:
  • A glass of water (about half- 2/3 filled)
  • An index card.
Holding onto the top of the card with one hand, I moved my other hand
down the glass, towards the bottom of it. I then carefully flipped the
glass upside down, while making sure you to keep holding the card in
place. I slowly moved my card holding a hand out from
underneath and the card stuck, holding the water without it spilling.
This is an example of trusting God even if it does not “make sense”.
Check out the link for the scientific explanation behind this experiment: Glass of Water

A Game to illustrate “obedience”
The “Obedience Game”
Equipment needed:
  • Paper plates
  • Markers
The children were each given a paper plate and were asked to place it on top of their heads.
They were then given a series of instructions that would lead them to draw a “house”.
1. Draw a triangle
2. Beneath it, draw a square
3. Inside the square, draw a circle

This game illustrated the following concept:

We may not understand what God is asking us to do when we are starting out but we will understand at the end.

Following both games/experiment, think about the story of the Virgin Mary while tying key points to the games:

She was told that she would conceive and give birth to a son who would reign over Jacob’s descendants: Trust

Her response to Archangel Gabriel beautifully illustrates her Obedience

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be
fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38)

I pray to have the faith and obedience of our Mother, the Holy Virgin Saint Mary.

God bless,

Math

In your journal write these notes:

To rename a fraction greater than or equal to one as a whole number or a mixed number in simplest form:

-Divide the numerator by the denominator

-Write the quotient as the whole number part of the mixed number. Write the remainder as the numerator and the divisor as the denominator of the fraction part.

-Express the fraction in simplest form.

Examples:

1)           24/12

Step 1– 24 divided by 12 = 2. The answer is a whole number.

2)           34/8

Step1–34 divided by 8 = 4 remainder 2; answer becomes 4 2/8

Step 2– Take the fraction 2/8 and put it in simplest form the GCF of 2 and 8 is 2; so 2 divided by 2 is 1 and 8 divided by 2 is 4.

Step 3– The answer is 4 1/4

Copy these notes into your Math journal

Fractions Greater Than One

  • Fractions greater than one are also called “Improper Fractions”

  • Improper Fractions are described has a fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator.

  • Example: 15/7
  • These fractions can be converted into a whole number or a mixed number
  • 15/7 = 2 1/7
  • Example:  24/12 = 2 because 24 divided by 12 = 2
  • Example: 21/6 = 3 3/6 because 21 divided by 6 equals 3 with a remainder of 3 so that would mean it equals 3 3/6. Then we must put our fraction into simplest form; simplest form is 3 1/2; so 21/6 = 3 1/2
  • Remember I told you all answers have to be put in simplest form.

Watch this video about Improper fractions https://youtu.be/ggYdPef3Nuk

Math

Fractions Equal to One

Copy these notes into your Math journal.
Fractions Equal to One
A fraction can be written as a whole number or a mixed number.

Fractions equal to one have the same numerator and denominator.

Example: 3/3 = 1

A fraction is simply a division problem.

The line in the fraction stands for divided by.

So 3 divided by 3 equals 1.

Example: 25/25 = 1

25 divided by 25 equals 1.

Therefore in this problem n/8 = 1 what does n= ___, n would equal 8 because 8 divided by 8 equals 1.

Work the problems #3-14 on p. 150-151 in your math journal. I will post answers later today. Check you answers and see how many answers you were correct on. Correct the one you got wrong with a different colored pencil.
