Math—Adding Fractions With Unlike Denominators

Notes in your journal:

Adding Fractions with Unlike denominators

Questions to ask when answering a problem

1) Are the denominators the same? If not find the lowest common denominator and convert the two fractions into equivalent fractions with the same denominator.
Example: 3/4 + 3/8  find the LCM which is 8. 3x2=6
                                                                          4x2=8
3/4 is equivalent to 6/8. Therefore 3/4 becomes 6/8 and 3/8 stays the same.

2) Add the two fractions, then ask is the answer a improper fractions, if it is change the fraction to a mixed number or whole number.
