Questions to ask when answering a problem
1) Are the denominators the same? If not find the lowest common denominator and convert the two fractions into equivalent fractions with the same denominator.
Example: 3/4 + 3/8 find the LCM which is 8. 3x2=6
4x2=8
3/4 is equivalent to 6/8. Therefore 3/4 becomes 6/8 and 3/8 stays the same.
2) Add the two fractions, then ask is the answer a improper fractions, if it is change the fraction to a mixed number or whole number.
Example: 6/8 + 3/8 = 9/8. 9/8 becomes 1 1/8.
3) Ask yourself is your answer in simplest form, always put your answer into simplest form.
Example 1 1/8 is in simplest form.
