Molecules
-Atoms combine with other atoms to form a molecule
-Molecule smallest particle of a substance
-Some molecules share electrons
-Some electrons no longer circle around the atom
they can go around two or more atoms, they are
bonded together
Compounds
-type of matter made of a combination of elements
-combined into a molecules
-most things around you are compounds
-every molecule of a compound has the same combination of elements
Ex: water H2O every molecule of water contains 2 hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom
-properties of compounds are different from the properties of elements that make them up
Ex: water is a liquid-at room temperature hydrogen and oxygen are invisible gases and do not have a smell
Ex: sugar made of hydrogen oxygen (gases) carbon (similar to pencil lead)
Chemical Formulas
-every compound has a name and formula
-formula shows how many atoms of each element are in the compound
Ex: formula-H2O, name water, 2 hydrogen, 1 oxygen
formula-CO2 name-carbon dioxide, 1carbon,
2 oxygen
formula-C6H12O6, name glucose, 6 carbon,
12 hydrogen, 6 oxygen
No number after the letter means only one atom
2 molecules of water is written 2H2O
4 molecules of carbon dioxide is written 4CO2
3 molecules of glucose is written 3C6H12O6
Must be able to identify the elements in a molecule and how many atoms of that element are in the molecule
How many elements in water?
H2O elements are hydrogen and oxygen for a total of 2 elements
How many atoms are in water?
2 hydrogen + 1 oxygen for a total of 3 atoms
Math-finish IXL 5-2: AC1 Find all the factor pairs of a number

Lesson 2 Periodic Table
Atom smallest particles of an element
Atom’s nucleus contains protons + charge and
neutrons no charge
Atom identified by the number of protons
Electrons move around the the protons and neutrons they have a negative charge; they may also join or leave atoms, or be shared between atoms
Periodic table organized in rows according to number of protons
Columns are arranged so that elements in each column have similar chemical properties
All elements have a symbol-1, 2, or 3 letters-only the first letter is capitalized
Unit 2 Lesson 4
Ponce de Leon landed in Florida looking for gold
Hernando de Soto landed in Florida explored southeastern US diseases carried by men and animals killed thousands of Native Americans
Explorers in Southwest- Cabeza de Vaca landed in Texas arrived in Mexico City after walking across Texas, New Mexico and Arizona
Vasquez de Coronado led expedition across southwest US
2 territories settled: South America called Peru and Central America called New Spain
Rulers gave encomiendas (large areas of land) to loyal colonists
Native Americans forced to work for Spanish landowners many died from disease, starvation and overwork
Bartolommeo de Las Casas a missionary spoke out about mistreatment
Spanish explorers brought African slaves to New Spain
The African slaves also worked in the silver mines
Many died so more were needed
1570’s slaves rebelled
Some were defeated and some got away and built their own communities
New Spain social pyramid
Viceroy-new leader
Peninsulares-Spaniards
Criollos-people born in New Spain
Mestizos-people both Spanish and Native American
Native Americans and Enslaved Africans worked without wages
1600-1680 20 settlements built in New Mexico, important for missions and mining natural resources where priests tried to convert Native Am.
By 1800 Spanish controlled the area which is now Texas, New Mexico Arizona and California
