Hernando de Soto landed in Florida explored southeastern US diseases carried by men and animals killed thousands of Native Americans



Explorers in Southwest- Cabeza de Vaca landed in Texas arrived in Mexico City after walking across Texas, New Mexico and Arizona

Vasquez de Coronado led expedition across southwest US


2 territories settled: South America called Peru and Central America called New Spain

Rulers gave encomiendas (large areas of land) to loyal colonists
