Science-Lesson 2 notes (cont.); Build a molecule website https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/build-a-molecule/latest/build-a-molecule_en.html
Molecules
-Atoms combine with other atoms to form a molecule
-Molecule smallest particle of a substance
-Some molecules share electrons
-Some electrons no longer circle around the atom
they can go around two or more atoms, they are
bonded together
Compounds
-type of matter made of a combination of elements
-combined into a molecules
-most things around you are compounds
-every molecule of a compound has the same combination of elements
Ex: water H2O every molecule of water contains 2 hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom
-properties of compounds are different from the properties of elements that make them up
Ex: water is a liquid-at room temperature hydrogen and oxygen are invisible gases and do not have a smell
Ex: sugar made of hydrogen oxygen (gases) carbon (similar to pencil lead)
Chemical Formulas
-every compound has a name and formula
-formula shows how many atoms of each element are in the compound
Ex: formula-H2O, name water, 2 hydrogen, 1 oxygen
formula-CO2 name-carbon dioxide, 1carbon,
2 oxygen
formula-C6H12O6, name glucose, 6 carbon,
12 hydrogen, 6 oxygen
No number after the letter means only one atom
2 molecules of water is written 2H2O
4 molecules of carbon dioxide is written 4CO2
3 molecules of glucose is written 3C6H12O6
Must be able to identify the elements in a molecule and how many atoms of that element are in the molecule
How many elements in water?
H2O elements are hydrogen and oxygen for a total of 2 elements
How many atoms are in water?
2 hydrogen + 1 oxygen for a total of 3 atoms
