Phase Changes
Solids and Liquids
-Phases, states of matter at room temperature is a physical property
-Particles always moving
-Phase is due to motion and arrangement of particles
-Solid, particles very close, warms up and melts
-Liquids do not have shape, take on shape of container
-Have a definite volume
-A material freezes at the same temperature it melts
-Different materials have different freezing/melting points
Changing Size
-Change size when temperature changes
-No new material is made or destroyed in temperature change
-Faster particles move, have more space between particles
-Cooler particles become a bit smaller, Hotter particles become a bit bigger
Liquids and Gases
-Gas particles very far apart
-Gas particles spread out in a container
-No definite shape or volume
-Can be squeezed more than solids and liquids
Evaporating and Boiling
-Evaporation-liquid becomes a gas
-Boiling point when bubbles of gas form
-Boiling point is a physical property
-Gas takes up more space, not making more matter
Condensation
-When a gas turns into a liquid
-gas cooling and changing to a liquid
-Gas encounters a cold surface
-examples-clouds, dew, soda can or glass
