Lesson 6 The First French Colonies

Quebec

1608 King sent Champlain to New France as governor

Champlain set up fur trading post at Quebec

He became friendly with Native Americans to strengthen the colony

French, Wyandot, and Algonquin (allies) defeated the Iroquois

New France Expands

Coureur de bois- hunters and trappers

Exported furs to Europe (quite popular)

Imported furs became quite popular

Permits limited the number of furs that could enter the country

Voyageurs-those receiving permits

New France’s Slow Growth

Early 1600’s New France expanded

Few French came, the  king only wanted Roman Catholics to settle there

French were more likely to settle in North America

Search for Passage Continues

Brulé continued the search; he explored Lake Huron, Ontario, Erie, and Superior

Nicolet continued the search, first to see Lake Michigan

Both explored the Great Lakes region living among the Native Americans
