-scientists created calendars and studied the stars

-developed system of mathematics and form of writing-hieroglyphs

-built stone pyramids and temples, palaces, roads, ball courts



North American Civilizations


Hohokam

-grew maize, beans, squash,and cotton

-used irrigation (system of canals or waterways to carry water many miles)

-built home from adobe brick (mud and straw) partly underground to cool homes day and heat at night


Ancestral Pueblo

-lived in apartment like dwellings built in side of cliffs

-had special rooms called kivas for meeting or religious purposes

-planted maize beans and squash

-used dry farming (caught rain and melted snow in stone-lined pots)


Mound Builders

-developed in river valleys (Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys)

-built cone-shaped hills and animal shaped earthworks

-Hopewell used mounds for burial or religious ceremonies

-Mississippians used mounds for burial or to watch the movement of the sun and stars

-Cahokia studied pattern of the seasons, built circle of trees to act as a sundial
